Whoops- Covid Update

After a number of weeks with no infections today we have one reported active case!

I do hope it is not Omicron which seems to be spreading exponentially across Europe now.

Everyone should be careful and take measures they consider best to minimise risk of infection.

Xmas Lights

I have been asked by John and Jo Arrowsmith to let you all know that they have as usual decorated their house for Xmas.

For those who don't know where they live I have put a marker on Google Maps. If you search for 69 Arrowsmith, Palaces you should find it.

Their actual address is Calle Valdez Leal 69, Palaces.

If you fancy seeing a nicely Christmas decorated property pop along and have a look.  Calle Valdes Leal 69

Todays Meeting

I am grateful to the 30 people who attended at the AGM today of the Railway Association. Although I would have thought we could have got more attendees!

However those who attended were treated to a excellent presentation by the President Rafa who is a force of nature and whose commitment to the project with a few helpers is fantastic. His explanation of his negotiations and progress was very interesting and illuminating. I think when the project is complete it should be named after him!

If anyone wishes to give any physical help, as the project requires quite of bit of attention, they can contact me and just help out as and when time permits. I wish we had got this going whilst I still lived there to help out and feel quite guilty. They will even be very happy to just have visitors to help encourage them when the are working there.

Railway Association Meeting VERY IMPORTANT

One final post regarding the work being done on the Railway Museum etc. Some of you will be more aware than others of the amazing progress being made in developing the Museum and the efforts to create a functioning historic train and carriages between Arboleas and Alfoquia.

The benefits of this to our area would be enormous (positively impacting property values) and creating a wonderful tourist attraction. These developments only come about through the support and involvement of the local community.

I am asking that you spread the word about tomorrows AGM of the Association to get as many people as possible along (it is after all a holiday so you cannot go shopping!) The more people who attend the more seriously the authorities look at giving more financial support to the project.

The meeting is in the Renfe Building (opposite the Coviran supermarket) at 1200 noon  tomorrow Monday 6th December. Go along and give them an hour of your time and discover the exciting plans for this project and by doing so show the people who hold the purse strings that we all support it.

Below is the latest release,

"Project for the restoration and enhancement of the Zurgena railway station

 - The Alfoquía ”

During this year we are working with the Association "Friends of the Zurgena Railroad" in the project that contemplates the recovery of the rail infrastructure of the Zurgena Railroad Station, the station tracks, the turntable, locomotive coach, the reconstruction of the railway maintenance workshops and the creation of a technical training school on issues related to the railway and industrial heritage and a railway museum in the passenger terminal, as well as a track laying on the old route of the Baza - Lorca line for the exhibition of historical railway equipment.

This project is well advanced in its execution, the restoration of the cargo ship and freight dock are well advanced (currently the restoration of the original flooring based on travertine marble slabs is being completed) as well as the first room of the museum and also very advanced is the recovery of the railway line, the turntable, the restoration of the mineral wagon weighing scale and the facilities of the maintenance workshops (which already have an operational section in the old CAMPSA facilities). attached to the train station).

We are all working together with the Association of Municipalities of the Almanzora Valley for the laying of a railway within the Almanzora Greenway, in a first phase from the Zurgena station to the municipality of Arboleas, which will allow the circulation of historic trains with original materials and we have also asked the Fundación de Ferrocarriles Españoles, the division in charge of the Historical Railway Heritage of the Ministry of Development, the transfer of several locomotive units and passenger cars to proceed with their restoration and commissioning.

 We keep working!!

Roads and Clean ups

We have an ongoing programme for maintenance and resurfacing works across the municipality. This is done in conjunction with the Junta de Almeria.

The next project which is awaiting final sign off (but that should happen in the next 2 weeks) is for the resurfacing of the Calle Nicolas Salmon along the stretch near the junction with Calle Abderramann 3.

The Town Hall is also going to do maintenance in the area of Calle Finlandia/Lituania within the next couple of weeks. Other areas will follow.

A number of these jobs were delayed due to the damage caused by the recent storms.

Kids Club

A new Kids Club has been set up for our area and it is to hold its first get together Friday 3rd December at 1500 hours.

This is an ideal chance for any ex pat parents of young kids to enjoy time in a mixed language environment for the benefit of the kids and an opportunity for mothers to socialise.

The Kids Club will meet in the library in Zurgena. If you do not know where it is I have added it to Google maps so if you search for Zurgena Library it should show it )after 24 hours from now 1700 Monday 22nd).

It is being organised by Lianne, who many of you may know. It will concentrate on using English so the Spanish kids can practice and if anyone wishes to go along to help out please contact Lianne either through Facebook at

 https://www.facebook.com/lianne.wright12

or her helper Hannah Bigley

Railway Association Meeting (Exciting Times)

The Zurgena Railway Association have arranged their Annual General Meeting to be held at midday on Monday 6th December (Constitution Day which is a Public Holiday).  It will be held in the Renfe building at Alfoquia.

I highly recommend as many people as possible attend this meeting. The reason I say this is to be able to show support and learn about the exciting projects that the association has in store for the area.

If the support is there and the team continue to progress their ideas, as they are doing, it will be a wonderful project for the future of the area both from both a locals perspective and for visitors.

So put the date and time in your diary and pop along and discover the exciting news and plans on Monday 6th December at 12 midday at the Renfe building (opposite the Coviran).

Driving Licences in Spain post Brexit

There has been much discussion about the position of UK expats resident in Spain and their UK driving licence. There is news that the Spanish government are requiring such drivers to exchange their UK licences of Spanish ones from 1st November.  In view of this I have copied below the advice from the gov.uk website regarding UK driving licences in Spain. You can sign up for the email alerts on the UK gov.uk website The link below includes this.

UK residents Driving Licence in Spain

Read our guidance for UK licence-holders about:

  • what you need to drive in the EU
  • general driving regulations

The British and Spanish governments are negotiating on long-term arrangements for exchanging driving licences without needing a practical test. Sign up for email alerts to get notified when we update this page.

If you were living in Spain before 1 January 2021, your valid UK driving licence will be recognised for driving in Spain until 31 December 2021.

If you moved to Spain after 1 January 2021, your valid UKlicence will be recognised for 6 months from the date you obtained residence, or until 31 December 2021, whichever is later.

If you live in Spain, you must exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one. You cannot use an International Driving Permit (IDP) instead.

What you need to do depends if you registered your details and intention to exchange with the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) before 30 December 2020. Read the Spanish Traffic Authority’s (DGT) guidance on using and exchanging licences in Spain (in Spanish, with English translation).

If you registered your details with the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) before 30 December 2020

If you lived in Spain before 1 January 2021 and registered your details and intention to exchange with the DGT before 30 December 2020, you should request an appointment with the DGT to exchange your UKlicence by 31 December 2021.

You will need:

  • proof you are registered as a resident in Spain (eg. TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero; green EUresidence certificate)
  • your UK licence

Read the DGT’s guidance on how to get an appointment(in Spanish with English translation).

The DGT will exchange your UK licence for a temporary driving permit (‘autorización temporal para conducir’) until your Spanish licence is ready. This document is valid in Spain only.

If you did not register your details with DGT before 30 December 2020

If you did not register with DGT before 30 December 2020 and wish to obtain a Spanish driving licence now, you should follow the DGT process for non-EUnationals. This includes taking a driving test.

TIE Issues & Covid

I keep hearing of people having issues getting their TIEs even though they applied prior to 31st December  2020.

There are a nub er of issues which can impact these applications but in general if paperwork is correct and applications were made in the time scale then they will be sorted. However if you wish to take a more proactive role in getting your TIE I received this poster yesterday. Which seems to be another way forward if you are having difficulties.

Continued good news on Covid still no active cases this week in Zurgena.

Halloween & Railway Association & Holiday

Firstly just a reminder to all that if you would like Spanish kids to visit your home when they are trick or treating to put a balloon outside your gate/door.  We cannot guarantee that it will work in every instance but I think it might help reduce the nuisance value but either way it should be beneficial. The addresses of those who have volunteered to have their addresses passed to the families have been passed to them and if they can they will visit.

Secondly not sure how many of you are keeping up with the amazing work of the railway association but their progress has been amazing and they have enlisted the help/support of many influential pe¡pole across Spain to assist in their aims of creating a museum and working train line between Alfoquia and Arboleas.

The people involved are giving up lots of their own time to progress the work and they have asked me to publicise the fact that they are on site at the Renfe area every Tuesday. They really appreciate people popping along and seeing what they are doing as, I think, it gives them support and motivation to know that people are interested in what they are working on.

Is if you are out and about in the area of Alfoquia Renfe any Tuesday just visit and have a chat. You do not need to get your hands dirty your mere presence will help.

And remember next Monday is a bank holiday.

Road Closed Due to Rain

Local Police inform us that they have cut off access to Zurgena over the Almanzora River for preventative reasons as driving on some areas of the road could be dangerous due to the heavy rain.

It will be reopened when it is deemed safe.

Halloween

To try and minimise nuisance issues on Halloween the more responsible Spanish children would like to only visit ex pat homes who are happy to have them visit in their costumes and may give them a treat.

If you would like s visit from some Spanish kids on Halloween evening please send your address to

jimszurgena@gmail.com or WhatsApp to 910194260

I think it is a good idea and should make Halloween a more enjoyable experience for both the kids and the residents.

Also if you do not want to give out your address then if you put a balloon outside your home they will know to call and not call at those where there is no balloon.

Covid and Tarmac

We have one new active case in the municipality today to report. Total active cases 1.

We hope to be able to improve the road surface along a stretch of the road in Llanos del Peral which runs past the electricity sub station at the bottom of Calle Abderraman in the next week or two as it has broken up rather badly.

Padron AGAIN

Over the years I have tried to highlight the issue of ensuring that people remain on the Padron.

The system currently in place in Spain is ridiculous. Every few months a list of names of people on the Padron, who are not Spanish nationals, is generated and the Town Hall tasked with ensuring that the names on the list are still resident and valid on the Padron.

This is where the problem arises because the TH will check their systems to see what telephone number they have for the individuals on the list and then try and contact them but, if they either do not have an up to date telephone number, or it is not a Spanish number or they do not get an answer then that person is removed from the Padron. Full stop.

It is a system that was brought in to prevent THs claiming for people who they were not entitled to and thereby increasing their entitlement to funds, as all monies received by THs from regional government are based on the numbers on the Padron.

There is a more immediate effect for anyone who falls off the Padron in that they would not be entitled to any benefits etc under the Spanish system.

As I have previously suggested you should check you are on the Padron at least every 2 years or even every year. Make a date in your calendar and just call into the TH and ask. Also ensure that the TH records have your latest Spanish phone number.

This all becomes more important post Brexit and for your own protection.

Keep it up & Crash Barrier

We continue to maintain no active cases in Zurgena municipality which is excellent news.

I have still to get the official release of the trip details for Archena!! Will probably get it the day before!

Following a request from a resident I have asked if we can try and install a crash barrier on the north side of the road (before the drop down into the Rambla) on the road to La Vida. The councillor responsible is going to see if we can factor in that work this year. There have been a couple of occasions when cars have failed to negotiate the bend which could have (but fortunately didn't) have serious outcomes.

Covid Good News and Consolidation Update

Great news on Covid no active cases at all in Zurgena!

I have had a few people ask about the situation with regards to the consolidation exercise and what is happening.

As is the norm in Spain Bureaucracy rules!

We are going through all the required legal processes and recently we moved to the stage of recruiting and contracting  the people who we need for the next stage of the process. I appreciate it is slow but we have to go through the process by adhering to the laws and norms laid down.

Rest assured we are moving forward as best we can. We cannot commit to timescales due to so many unknowns but we are working as hard as we can.

Can Anyone Help

As you know we are cracking on with the development of the Railway museum, and its area, with our hope of running some engines on the lines once renovated. It is a massive project for the future of Zurgena.

One of the most enthusiastic supporters and who is committing a lot of work to this project is Max Kite. He lives more than an hour away from Zurgena and is trying to devote as much time to the project as he can. To that end it would help him greatly if he could find a small place to rent in our area during the months of October and November. This would save him all the travelling time.

Does anyone have something which he could rent. He does assure me he is house trained! If you know of anything please contact me and I will pass your details to Max.

Cycling Tour de Espana

Next Sunday, August 22, the Cycling Tour of Spain will pass through our municipality around 1:00 p.m.

We have shown below the route that it will take and the streets that will be closed in La Alfoquía from 12:30 p.m. to 13:30 approximately.

The return will also run through Los Carasoles, so we recommend  not accessing the A-334 durin this time.

 * Citizen collaboration is very important respecting the crossing points so that everything runs smoothly and safely and no unfortunate incidents occur!

We invite you to encourage and support the cyclists as they pass through our town!

Rubbish AGAIN

The below article has been published by Zurgena Town Hall and I have put it on here to try and ensure widespread reading! If you know any new residents who may not be aware of this please let them know. The problem continues despite our best efforts.

¨Once again we must insist on the importance of citizen collaboration in order maintaining our municipality in the best health conditions.

Furniture and other types of garbage are being deposited in different parts of the municipality, in an uncontrolled manner.  This not only causes an unpleasant scene but also produces smells and attracts rodents to the area.

The large items must ALWAYS be deposited the day before the collection days indicated for each municipality. In the case of Zurgena the collection days are the 12th and 27th of each month.  They must be left next to the closest container and without invading the road or obstructing the passage.

When the day of collection falls on a Sunday or a holiday, it will be postponed until the following day as also in the case of a Sunday to Monday and in the case of a holiday the following day.

In the event that you cannot wait for the pick-up days, you can always deposit them at the recycling/rubbish tip that is closest to your home.

I have garden waste and pruning, which container do I use?

In the case of such garden waste, the Consortium DOES NOT TAKE THEM as they break the machines that separate the waste.  Only small prunings, such as garden pruning remains, can be deposited but must be in tightly closed small bags with the organic matter container (INSIDE).  The rest of large prunings such as palm leaves or trunks, should not be deposited in the container since the collection truck will leave it uncollected that night with the problems that this entails for all the residents of the area.

We ask for the collaboration of all to achieve a clean municipality.  Thanks.

Very Clever Scam

Just thought I should post about this very clever scam that is doing the rounds and which I nearly fell for.

It started as a message on Facebook messenger from a friends account just asking how we were etc and after a couple of messages back and forth (which made it look convincing) then asked if I heard the good news about a grant available to help people financially. It was referred to a FGG Federal Government Grant to aid people in these difficult times. It then implied on another message that my friend had received her grant within 48 hours - So now I started to get suspicious! I was then asked if I wanted the link and how to apply. When I replied saying I would check it out as I thought it might be a scam it replied,  ¨ Okay¨.

Checked with friend by email and discovered her Facebook account had been hacked. She lives in Spain and I am in the UK so obviously trawling Facebook irrespective of account holders location.

The scammers are getting more and more clever.

Railway Museum & Todays Covid

First the bad news - 1 new case so we now have 4 active cases.

Secondly I thought it worthwhile to share this information which we have forwarded to the Spanish and English Press.

To give you some background to this project, - the small village of La Alfoquia in the Almanzora valley was integral to the movement of the areas´ minerals in the 19th century and the village of La Alfoquia became an important part of the railway infrastructure to manage these materials. The village in fact owed its existence to the railway.

Now, after many years of work and planning, work is progressing to establish a museum in the town using the remaining buildings (some of which will require renovation) to create an openair, and indoor, museum to showcase the historical importance of this station and in the future to open and run a train between La Alfoquia and Arboleas. As much of the track still exists.

Video memories have been obtained from ex employees who recalled their times on the railway, artefacts are being collected, basic work is being done to create the indoor museum and work has already been undertaken to reveal the hidden tracks etc.

We formed an Association to which everyone, with an interest in this project, can join. This Association has a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/755026744999786

The next major part of the project is the acquisition of a railway engine to use to run the rolling stock on and for maintenance. Our President Rafael Garcia De La Mata has sourced an engine which would be a fantastic help for the development of the museum However it is languishing in Poland and needs to be transported to Spain. The cost of the purchase and  transportation is going to cost €15,000 which sounds a lot but compared to the purchase cost of a similar engine locally is very small.  (I have attached some pics of the engine we need below). We also have plans to recover other engines and rolling stock but this engine is needed to develop the outdoor part of the museum first before we can place any other rolling stock.

To help us on the way to bringing this part of the project to fruition we have set up a  Facebook donation page at https://www.facebook.com/donate/426627138488212/,

We hope people will want to be a part of something hugely, and historically, important. for all the Almanzora valley and join our association and/or donate to help by following the above link.

For any further details information please contact Rafael Garcia de la Mata at rafarestaura@gmail.com or telephone +34 607 375 789 or myself.

Covid Cases

I must admit that I had become less concerned about the Covid figures with them being so low lately. HOWEVER! It now transpires that across Spain there is an increase in the Beta variant which originated in Africa.

In relation to our area there is just one new case and one recovery leaving 2 active cases but it is obvious from the wider story that care must still be taken out there.

Alfoquia Fiesta 2021

Sorry for late post not notified until late Wednesday.

This weekend would normally be the La Alfoquía Festivities in Honor of the Virgen del Carmen. As We all know the situation we are going through due to the Covid 19 pandemic will not allow us to fully enjoy this as usual, but we still wanted to organize, for this week, a series of activities for all audiences but as always respecting security measures.

The use of masks in all acts will be mandatory and safe distances will be maintained.

This year there will be no procession through the streets of La Alfoquía after Holy Mass, but it will be celebrated in the Plaza de la Virgen del Carmen.

We hope you all enjoy these events and we hope that next year, we can celebrate our parties normally!

The Heathers Donation

Due to problems of diaries I have been unable to get a photograph of Mary and Tom Kavanagh handing over the cheque for the monies raised at The Heathers from customers over the past few months. I have however shown below the deposit slip for the money to the school.

They raised a total of over €317 which has been deposited into the school account for use by the headteacher as he sees fit.

He was very pleased to receive the donation and said it would be a big help in funding extras during next term.

Covid Info from El Pais

Copied this from El Pais for information

Those vaccinated who have had contact with a case of coronavirus will not have to quarantine, but they will have to undergo tests to detect if they have contracted covid-19.

Health has announced that the 10 days of isolation will no longer be a requirement for those who have injected the two doses (or one if the drug is Janssen's) if they have contact with a positive for covid-19. A person is also considered to have the full regimen if they have passed the disease and are then inoculated with a single dose of the drugs from two injections —Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Pfizer-BioNTech.

Although vaccinated people are not required to isolate themselves, they will have to undergo tests to detect if they have contracted the infection. Health specifies that it will be required "to carry out a PCR at the beginning and another seven days after the last contact with the confirmed case." Vaccinated people have a very low chance of developing severe symptoms of the coronavirus, but they can spread it to others if they have contact with the virus. They can infect even without developing symptoms and once immunized. However, its ability to spread is less than that of unvaccinated people, as a study carried out in the United Kingdom with statistics of 1.5 million people has shown.

Health recommends to those immunized who have contact with a positive "avoid contact with vulnerable and unvaccinated people." In addition, the ministry adds, "they will be instructed to use a mask in their social interactions, not attend mass events and monitor the possible appearance of compatible symptoms."

Railway Progress

As, those of you who are members of the Railway Association, will know things are moving along very nicely now with our exciting plans for the Railway Station in Alfoquia.

Rafa and Max, who are the two people most driving the progress, are going to be at the Renfe from 1100 this Friday. They are hoping to have the bobcat there and to identify the location of the railway tracks. (which they will be later restoring in the hope of future use.).

If this project goes as well, as I now think it will (after a hiatus of years!), it will bring a huge attraction to the village and cement its place in history.

Rafa and Max are asking if you have any time or interest in the railway you can join them after 1100 this Friday and maybe go for a beer after.

So if you can pop along and find out more from the guys, you will be most welcome.

Interruption to Water Supply. Update

It was originally envisaged the supply would be back on by 13000 but Galasa now inform us that the current interruption to the water supply is to be extended. The failure affects the General Network and is located under the bridge, next to the Calafa, which makes the necessary work to solve it more difficult. Sorry for the inconvenience. They are working as fast as they can to finish as soon as possible.

They now estimate 2200 but I think that may be difficult.

New Measures as Lock Down Eases

The below amended measures issued today by the Junta ;

🦠New Measures announced by the Junta de Andalucía after the end of the State of Alarm next Sunday.
The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has reported that, with the tools available to his Government and following the advice of the experts, the autonomous community will begin on May 9 a process of transition to normality after the end of the state of alarm.
In each phase, the opening hours of shops and hotels will be gradually extended. Likewise, the capacity of shops, bars, restaurants, transport and public shows will depend on the alert level - from 1 to 4 - declared in each municipality.
Thus, this Sunday, with the end of the state of alarm, both the curfew and the perimeter closure of communityies will disappear, and, in addition, the number of people who meet at homes can no longer be regulated, the phase stabilisation, which now includes the following measures:
1. The curfew disappears.
2. The communities, which until now had closed perimeters, become open.
3. Opening of the hotel business until 00.00 hours.
4. Tables in restaurants: maximum capacity of 8 people inside and 10 outside, depending on the alert level of each municipality.
5. Celebration venues, with a maximum capacity of 300 people inside and 500 outside.
6. Bars with music and discos may open until 2:00 am, with the same seating and table conditions as restaurants.
7. Dance floors will only be allowed in municipalities with alert level 1, always outside and the mask is mandatory.
8. Performances, cinemas, theaters, sporting events and bullrings, at alert levels 1 and 2, a free seat must be left between each group of spectators. In the rest of the levels it will be necessary to respect the meter and a half of separation.
9. In beaches and swimming pools there is no time limit. Yes, a specific protection plan against Covid-19 will be necessary, as in 2020, and the maintenance of a distance of one and a half meters between groups.
10. Regarding mobility, only those municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants with a cumulative incidence in 14 days of more than 1,000 infections per 100,000 inhabitants will remain closed. In them, only essential commercial activity will be allowed. In those with less than 5,000 inhabitants, a specific risk assessment will be carried out.
Thus, on June 1, if the conditions of the pandemic allow it, the "advance phase" will be activated, with fewer restrictions on schedules and capacity.
