Culture Walk

Almost 50 people took part in the cultural and history walk around Zurgena with our guide Isa and her translater Teresa.

They explained the history of Zurgena and its famous people. I think everyone enjoyed and came away with a much better understanding of the history of our little village.

Tomorrows Vote

Just a reminder that tomorrows´ election is for the National Elections which we are not allowed to vote in. The local elections in which we can are on 26th May.

Postal Voting and Medical Complaints

Firstly many people are reporting that they have not yet received their voting cards (including me) Normally they arrive about 4 weeks before the election, so they may still be in the post but, if anyone is concerned, about your ability to vote, if you call into the Town Hall, we can check the computer to make sure.

This is the process for Postal Voting for the local elections this year.

If you are not going to be here or able to vote in the election on Sunday 26th May there is no opportunity to have a proxy vote. There is however the option to have a postal vote.

To do this you need to attend at any Post Office with identification eg NIE, passport. Ask for ´Solicitud para Votar por Correo.´ They will then send you a notification (by certificated post) that the form is in the Post Office. You then return to the Post Office again with your identification they give you the form which you just need to complete and return to the Post Office at that time or prior to the 16th May. The forms are available now at any Post Office and this includes our little local one but that only opens 1300 x 1400.

If you require any further help or advice just let me know.

We have had a few complaints about the stand in doctor at Zurgena surgery. Unfortunately we have little influence with the Medical system. The only options are to ask for the Complaint Form at the surgery (Hoja de Reclamacion) complete and submit or (and I am indebted to John Coles for this) write to the supervising office is at  Andalalusian Health Service   Avd De la Constitucion 18  41071  Sevilla.

This link helps explain https://www.spanishsolutions.net/legal-issues-in-spain/hojas-de-reclamaciones-customer-complaint-forms/

If you require any help completing the form or writing a letter we will be happy to help.

Election Fever

Well things are building now and people are getting excited to see who is going to be contesting the elections.

The full lists should be out this week and I think we can start campaigning next week.

I believe there will be at least 3 Political Parties contesting the election on the 26th May. Our Party PSOE with Luis, Lola and I, and then PP and Cuidadanos.  Once the lists are published we will understand better our chances of winning reelection.

Walking Tour of Zurgena and Dog Judge

About 8 years ago we held a little historical walking tour of Zurgena. It was to visit and gain information about the history of the village. As so many new people have moved into the area we thought it worthwhile to repeat the walk.

We will set off from the Town Hall at 1030am Tuesday 30th April and will last about one and a half hours. You may want to have a drink or tapas aftewards.

The walk is of course free but so I can ensure that we manage it ok can you please let me know if you attending.

Secondly a request for anyone who has the appropriate skill set to be a judge for Dog competitions. I believe I met someone who used to be a Police Dog Handler which would be ideal. A local charity who hold such competitions have need of an independent judge for future events. If you are or know someone please get them to get in touch.

Sports Activities & Chemists Precription Drugs

As you know we try to encourage as many sports activities as we can in the Municipality.

I recently realised that I had not informed you of the process to hire any of the facilities.

Firstly I am asked to remind you of the Over 50s Veterans Football which Ian Hamilton manages. This activity is becoming increasingly popular and the team are travelling to take part in tournaments across Southern Spain. If you are interested in this activity training is held each Monday and Thursday at 1000 at the artificial pitch by the side of the pool in La Alfoquia.

The Town Hall also has other facilities which are available for residents to play on. These include the Sports Hall, the Padel courts, the petanque courts, the gymnasium etc. If you wish to avail yourself of any of these facilities just contact me and I can arrange it.

Second point is that I have had a few people querying why the chemist is not issuing certain drugs without a prescription. The reason is that the government are tightening the rules and also carrying our spot checks on the Pharmacists and issuing fines of 10s of thousands of euros for non compliance
with the new rules. Basically if a drug has a small circle on the packaging then they are forbidden from issuing it without a prescription. There are still some Pharmacists issuing when they shouldn´t but that is their risk.  The only ones which can be sold are those advertised on television.

Trip to Ubeda/Baeza

The Town Hall trip to the World Heritage Sites of Ubeda and Baeza was undertaken last Saturday by 32 Spanish and 22 English speaking persons.
The weather was very poor at the start of the day but it did not dampen the spirits and most people enjoyed the sites, the company and the lunch. I have attached a few pics of the day. I am not sure whether we will be able to arrange another trip before the elections on 26th May.

FLAMENCO ROOTS AND FUTURE PROMISES
The art of flamenco is an immense subject and is open to much debate amongst experts. It is safe to say, however, that despite the many conflicting opinions over the various theories of its roots and origins, one thing is certain; Flamenco music is the music of the Spanish gypsy community.
The flamenco song of the gypsy community is neither artificial nor invented. The pain and indeed the lighter, more fun festive side of flamenco song comes from a basis of the struggles and hard times experienced by this community. The painful sounding more serious types of flamenco such as the Soleá and the Seguiriya are external  expressions of genuine suffering, they have not been invented to adorn musical notes. The truly happy and festive styles such as the Bulerías and certain types of Tangos have originated from this community throwing huge in house fiestas as a form of escapism from their daily struggles as an alienated community.
The entire history of gypsy flamenco is based on family sagas, traditions passed on from generation to generation in the form of an inheritance. Indeed within the many palos of flamenco ( branches of flamenco) exist sub divisions of specific styles created by certain people who then give the palo their own family name after it´s general name. In other words they are personal family stamps on the music.  This topic in itself is vast, but to summarise one can say that the flamenco music of this genre is literally the soundtrack to the history and heritage of the Spanish gypsies.
It is important to acknowledge at this point that of course there are a huge amount of flamenco artists who are not of gypsy origin, indeed some of today´s leading artists are non gypsy artists. However, the majority will admit that the main source of their inspiration and basis of their information has come from studying the great gypsy artists.
THE FUNDAMENTAL ROLE OF CHILDREN IN MAINTAINING THE LEGACY
One can safely say that within many of the leading gypsy flamenco families, the children often understand the complicated rhythms and complexities of flamenco music before they can talk or walk properly. This is not an exaggeration, it is a fact. The families see it is as an obligatory part of continuing the family legacy, the children are present even whilst still on the breast listening and internalising the complexities of the music and dance so that it becomes natural to them. There are some interesting  documentaries filmed in black and white which portray these scenarios very clearly. The music must be transmitted to their infants in order for the family´s legacy to continue. Flamenco is in the D.N.A of these people and it is impossible for the Spanish gypsy culture to be disassociated from flamenco. Likewise, and more worryingly, due to present trends towards more contemporary non gypsy flamenco, it is unthinkable to consider Flamenco without Spanish gypsies being at the basis of the art form. At present, there is a trend towards the cleansing of flamenco and elimination of the gypsy roots; major festivals are not contracting the pure artists and are promoting the overly stylised contemporary artists. This is a sad state of affairs. We are in danger of losing the passion, creativity, spontaneity and force of gypsy flamenco. One could almost consider it a form of theft of their art form.  As such, WE FIGHT  to promote PURE, RAW GYPSY FLAMENCO.  In order to continue the legacy we need the young artists to come through with hope that one day they will make a living from their incredible and unique art form.
